Cervical Collars: Soft vs Hard vs Philadelphia — Your Doctor Decides, We Supply
These collars are not grades of the same product. They are different clinical tools. Do not substitute.
A soft foam collar, a hard adjustable collar, and a Philadelphia collar look related in a product photo. Clinically they are not interchangeable. The prescription is the instruction; our job is to fulfil it in the right size.
- Soft cervical collar — comfort, mild support, often short-term. It does not immobilise a fracture.
- Hard adjustable collar — firmer restriction of flexion and extension, used when more control is required.
- Philadelphia collar — a two-piece rigid collar used after trauma or surgery when the prescriber wants substantial immobilisation.
Sizing uses neck circumference and, for some rigid collars, neck height. A collar that lifts the chin too high or leaves the neck free is the wrong size. We fit these at the Mukono showroom whenever we can, and we never guess a Philadelphia size from a WhatsApp photo alone.
