How to Measure for a Lumbar Support Belt: Step-by-Step Guide

A lumbar belt that does not fit will not be worn — and will not help. Measure once, correctly, at home.

Lumbar sacral belts only work when they sit on the pelvis and lower lumbar spine with even pressure. The most common reason a belt “does not help” is that it is the wrong size, or it is being worn up on the waist like a fashion belt.

What to measure

  • Stand relaxed, clothes thin or none at the waist.
  • Find the top of the hip bones (iliac crests).
  • Wrap a soft tape around the body at that level — not at the navel if your waist is much narrower than your pelvis.
  • Breathe out gently. Read the centimetre mark. Do not pull the tape tight.
  • If you are between sizes, tell us both the measurement and whether you prefer a firmer or a more flexible belt.

Types we may match to your prescription

Standard, neoprene, lumbomed, double-support, and lace-pull belts are different products. A lace-pull gives a stronger cinch for some lumbar disc presentations; a softer neoprene belt is often better for all-day wear. We fulfil what is written, and we ask the prescriber if the specification is ambiguous.
