Home Recovery After Knee Replacement: The Equipment You Need
A practical kit for the first weeks at home after total or partial knee replacement — mobility, swelling, and sleep included.
Most of a knee replacement recovery happens at home, not in the ward. The equipment list is short, but each item has a job. Buying extras you will not use is waste; missing the walker you need on day two is dangerous.
The usual kit
- A walker for the first days, then elbow crutches as your surgeon and physiotherapist progress you.
- A hinged or ROM knee brace if it was prescribed — not every replacement needs one.
- A knee-rest pillow to keep the leg elevated and the knee in a comfortable position in bed.
- Cold packs for swelling, used as advised — never directly on skin.
- Compression stockings if they were prescribed to reduce clot risk.
Do not lock the knee in full extension with pillows under the joint for long periods unless you have been told to. A pillow under the heel, not the knee, is the usual elevation pattern. If you are unsure, ask your physiotherapist — or ask us to confirm against the prescription.
WhatsApp your discharge prescription to +256 792 457725. We can have a home recovery kit ready for collection in Mukono the same day.
