Recovery at Home: How Families Can Support a Loved One After Hospital Discharge
The first week at home is when families feel most alone. A calm, practical list of what actually helps — and which equipment to have ready.
Discharge day is not the end of care. It is the start of a different kind of care, usually led by a spouse, a child, or a sibling. Families who prepare a small amount of equipment and a simple routine do better than families who wait until the first fall.
Before you leave the hospital
- Ask for a written equipment list, not only a verbal one.
- Photograph the prescription and the discharge summary.
- Confirm who will set walking-aid height — a therapist, or MediQuest at collection.
The home that receives the patient
Clear a path from bed to toilet that does not include a loose mat. Place a commode if the bathroom is a step away. Keep the walker on the side of the bed the patient actually uses. A cervical or knee-rest pillow, cold packs, and the prescribed brace should be in one place, not scattered.
Encourage the exercise programme in short sessions. Do not add YouTube routines that contradict the prescription. If something does not fit, WhatsApp us — we would rather exchange a sizing error than have a patient abandon the item.
Families: send the discharge prescription to MediQuest on +256 792 457725. We will confirm what is in stock and what can be delivered to Mukono, Kampala, or Jinja.
