Knee Brace Guide: Which Type is Right for Your Injury?
Elastic support, hinged brace, OA unloader, or ROM brace — they are not interchangeable. A plain-English guide for patients and prescribers in Uganda.
“Knee brace” is a family of products, not a single item. The right type depends on the injury, the stage of recovery, and whether the knee needs compression, stability, or controlled movement. This is why we ask for the prescription before we sell.
The main types we stock
- Elastic / knitted supports — mild compression for strain, early osteoarthritis, or proprioception. Not for ligament instability.
- Open-patella knee caps — similar compression with a cut-out that reduces pressure on the kneecap.
- Hinged knee braces (nylon or aluminium hinges) — medial-lateral stability after ligament injury or meniscal repair.
- ROM (range-of-motion) braces — hinges that lock or limit flexion/extension after surgery, as your surgeon sets.
- OA (osteoarthritis) unloaders — right- or left-specific braces that shift load away from a worn compartment.
Sizing is not optional
A brace that is too loose does not protect. One that is too tight restricts circulation and will not be worn. We measure mid-patella circumference, and sometimes thigh and calf, before we confirm a size. WhatsApp us the prescription and we will tell you where to place the tape.
